Virtual Schools a boon to Del. students

“It’s been really good for us because she’s been able to keep her schedule at school,” her mother, Christine Johnson, said. “And since it’s being done through the school system, we don’t have to pay for it, so it’s an excellent idea.”
The state piloted the virtual school in January with 284 high school students from 18 of the state’s 19 school districts. Six courses — Algebra I, pre-calculus, Spanish I, Spanish II, American government and physical education — are available. The coursework and the instructors are provided by Florida Virtual School and Apex Learning in Washington.

The Delaware Department of Education / Delaware Center for Educational Technology will continue the Pilot Program of the Delaware Virtual School for the 2008-2009 school year. The Pilot Program will operate very similar to the initial Pilot Program. Online courses will address high school student needs with the main intent being develop and implement the procedures for efficiently working with the high schools in selecting and enrolling students who wish to take online courses. Lessons learned from the initial Pilot Program have been incorporated into the procedures for the 2008-2009 school year.
